DOE Launches New Lab Partnering Service Platform

July 25, 2018 │ Girish Balakrishnan, Business Development Intern, Clean Energy Business Network

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) recently launched a new resource called the “Lab Partnering Service (LPS),” an online tool for innovators, investors, and others interested in clean technology solutions. The service is a great resource to access the latest technology information, projects and patents from across the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its 17 national laboratories. The three primary tools offered by the LPS are as follows:

  • Connect with Experts: This feature enables direct interaction with subject matter experts from the various labs. You can utilize this tool to receive clarification on technology questions or ask about existing lab resources and partnership opportunities most relevant to your technology.
  • Access Technical/Marketing Summaries: This aspect provides information on patents, patent applications, and publications available for licensing or further technological development.
  • Search a Visual Patent Database: This tool is developed using the IN-SPIRE Visual Document Analysis and the Scalable Reasoning System (SRS) and enables a visually-facilitated search of the patent content contained in the Lab Partnering Service.

In short, this resource serves as a bridge between a diverse set of energy professionals by providing multi-faceted search capability across numerous technology areas and national laboratories.

How would LPS help CEBN members?

  • Innovators & Researchers: The LPS offers a useful reservoir of information such as patents and other new technologies available for licensing. In addition, the large network of experts from the national laboratories can help you find resources to address technical challenges you may be facing. The LPS is also a great way to build partnerships with other technology providers and investors to expand business opportunities.

Michael Sams, CEO of AMSEnergy, participated in a beta-testing session with DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions in the final stages of development of the LPS platform. He remarked, “Our national research centers, like those participating in the Lab Partnering Services (LPS), are a wealth of information and I am happy to have participated in the beta-testing process.”

Founded by Sams in 2006, AMSEnergy produces a highly efficient Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger. Michael highlighted the value the LPS portal brings to companies like his, “Experiencing the opportunities available, including previous research performed and assistance and advice with new projects, our team has already reviewed information that may enhance our technology’s capabilities.”

Recognition of CEBN Members Involved in LPS Testing: Thanks to a small team of CEBN members who joined our staff in beta-testing the platform prior to launch. These individuals provided constructive feedback on the user interface, search optimization, ease of access, and other topics that informed the DOE’s final version of the platform:

Brandon Julian, CEO, Pure Energy Group

Michael Sams, CEO, AMS Energy

Michael Thomas, Chief Sustainability Officer, Michael T. Thomas Holdings, Inc.

If you have questions or feedback on how the CEBN can help members most effectively tap into the LPS platform, please feel free to reach out to labramson@cebn.org or business@cebn.org.

The Clean Energy Business Network (CEBN) works to advance the clean energy economy through public policy, education, and business support for small- to medium energy enterprises. Started in 2009 by The Pew Charitable Trusts, the CEBN is now a small business division of the Business Council for Sustainable Energy. The CEBN serves 3,000+ members across all 50 U.S. states working across a broad spectrum of clean energy and transportation technologies.
