COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH IN MAGNETIC FUSION ENERGY SCIENCES ON INTERNATIONAL TOKAMAKS

The DOE SC program in Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) hereby announces its interest in receiving applications for experimental research in magnetic fusion energy sciences conducted on international tokamak facilities. Selected awards will be supported under the FES Burning Plasma Science: Long Pulse Tokamak program area, which supports U.S staff working in collaboration with international tokamak programs to explore critical science and technology issues at the frontiers of magnetic fusion energy research.

Indiana Michigan Power – RFP Renewable Energy Projects

Indiana Michigan Power Company (I&M) has now issued the 2022 All-Source RFP which seeks additional generation and capacity resources consistent with its 2021 IRP as follows:

  • Approximately 800 MW of Wind via a purchase and sale agreement (PSA) for purchase of 100% equity interest in a project company or a power purchase agreement (PPA) for purchase of Renewable Energy Products produced by a Wind resource
  • Approximately 500 MW of Solar via a purchase and sale agreement (PSA) for purchase of 100% equity interest in a project company or a power purchase agreement (PPA) for purchase of Renewable Energy Products produced by a Solar resource

NREL’s Competitiveness Improvement Project

The distributed wind energy industry requires rapid innovation to reduce costs and increase customer confidence, but many companies that build small and mid-sized wind turbines lack the resources to develop, certify, and commercialize next-generation technology. Managed by NREL on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Wind Energy Technologies Office, CIP awards cost-shared subcontracts and technical support to manufacturers of small and medium-sized wind turbines. Designed to make distributed wind energy technologies more cost-competitive and reliable, these awards help manufacturers of wind turbines less than 1 megawatt in capacity to:

  • Optimize their designs
  • Develop advanced manufacturing processes
  • Perform turbine and component testing and certification
  • Accelerate pathways for commercialization.

The goals of CIP are to make wind energy cost-competitive with other distributed generation technologies and increase the number of wind turbine designs tested and certified to national standards.

NY: Energy Efficiency and Clean Technology Training

The New York State Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is seeking proposals for technical training, experiential learning, job placement and supportive services that enable New York State to meet the requirements of a clean energy economy and advance the climate equity and just transition goals of New York’s Climate Act. The purpose of this solicitation is to strengthen the pipeline of skilled talent for the Energy Efficiency and Clean Technology (EE&CT) labor market. Projects funded through this solicitation are intended to develop and/or deliver technical training and relevant education, hands-on experience, and placement into paid internships, apprenticeships, full-time jobs, or advanced formal training to ensure that both new and existing workers, apprentices, journeypersons, and students, as applicable, have the skills, experience, and qualifications required to meet industry demand.

Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities – USDA

Up to approximately $1 billion will be made available for the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities projects through this funding opportunity, which will build markets and invest in America’s climate-smart farmers, ranchers, and forest owners to strengthen U.S. rural and agricultural communities. Through the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities, USDA will support the production and marketing of climate-smart commodities through a set of pilot projects that provide voluntary incentives through partners to producers and land owners, including early adopters, to:

  • implement climate-smart production practices, activities, and systems on working lands,
  • measure/quantify, monitor and verify the carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) benefits associated with those practices, and
  • develop markets and promote the resulting climate-smart commodities.

EARLY CAREER: DRIVERS AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF ENERGY TRANSITIONS IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing community-engaged research that will address the drivers and environmental impacts of energy transitions in underserved communities. For purposes of this competition and the evaluation of applications, “underserved communities” refers to populations sharing a particular characteristic, as well as geographic communities, that have been systematically denied a full opportunity to participate in aspects of economic, social, and civic life, including people of color, low income, rural, tribal, indigenous, and other populations that may be disproportionately impacted by environmental harms and risks.

CHEMICAL AND MATERIALS SCIENCES TO ADVANCE CLEANTECH AND LOW-CARBON MANUFACTURING

The DOE Office of Science program in Basic Energy Sciences (BES) announces its interest in receiving new applications to advance basic and fundamental chemical and materials sciences that underpin clean energy technologies and low-carbon manufacturing. The goal is creation of foundational knowledge to support the
development of approaches that will minimize climate impacts of energy technologies and manufacturing. For this FOA, clean energy technologies include approaches to capture, produce, convert, store, and use energy that reduce or eliminate unwanted emissions such as greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide, methane, etc.). These technologies also include approaches such as direct air capture (DAC) and carbon storage/sequestration to decrease emissions that have been
released into the environment from energy production and use. Low-carbon manufacturing refers to manufacturing processes that minimize carbon emissions and energy consumption. Investments from this FOA are anticipated to include awards that build foundational knowledge underpinning the Energy Earthshots Initiative. A mandatory pre-application must be submitted by March 16.

Clean Hydrogen Production, Storage, Transport and Utilization to Enable a Net-Zero Carbon Economy

This FOA will develop technologies enabling clean hydrogen production, transport, storage, and use in the energy sector, including electricity, heat, transportation, and industrial use. The development of these technologies supports the ambitious goals for a greenhouse gasneutral economy by 2050, a carbon pollution free power sector by 2035, and a fifty percent reduction from 2005 levels in economy-wide net greenhouse gas pollution by 2030. See Amendment 6 FOA for up-to-date information on Areas of Interest.

Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project Community Technical Assistance

ETIPP employs a community-driven approach to identify and plan strategic clean energy and energy resilience solutions that address a community’s specific challenges. This approach leverages the experience and expertise of local community leaders, residents, and organizations with the ETIPP partner network. The ETIPP partner network connects selected communities with regional nonprofit or academic organizations, energy experts at DOE research institutions, and DOE offices to navigate options for addressing local clean energy and energy resilience challenges.

By participating in ETIPP, communities receive substantial support from ETIPP experts in the form of technical assistance on energy analysis and planning (see Technical Assistance below). Each community is also supported by an ETIPP regional partner that can assist with identifying and developing a community’s needs and goals.

Civic Innovation Challenge

The Civic Innovation Challenge is a multi-agency, federal government research and action competition that aims to fund ready-to-implement, research-based pilot projects that have the potential for scalable, sustainable, and transferable impact on community-identified priorities. It aims to flip the community-university dynamic, inviting communities to identify civic priorities ripe for innovation and to then partner with researchers to address those priorities. Teams of researchers and civic partners will submit proposals to one of two community-identified tracks by May 5th: ‘Living in a Changing Climate’ and ‘Resource & Service Equity.’
