ARPA-E is soliciting proposals to develop and test power system optimization and control algorithms for grid optimization. The major challenges include the electric power sector’s security-constrained optimal power flow, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) intermittent resources, storage, grid resilience, grid restoration, grid dynamics, and cyber threats.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking proposals for improvement of Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) contribution in the future electricity system. The target areas include facility design for modular hydropower, new use cases and conceptual designs for pumped storage systems, modeling, and analysis of pumped storage in system optimization.

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is planning to fund proposals for operational solutions to reduce compliance costs and improve the environmental performance of wind turbines. The three focus areas are advancing smart curtailment strategies, advanced component R&D, and development of offshore wind monitoring and mitigation technologies.

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) is accepting funding proposals for subsurface characterization and operational improvements in geothermal technology. The research areas are machine learning for geothermal exploration and advanced analytics for efficiency and automation in geothermal operations.

The Airforce Research Laboratory’s Advanced Power Technology Office is seeking white paper proposals for solutions to improve the Airforce’s Energy Security Posture. The key research areas include aviation energy, Industrial energy, expeditionary energy, installation energy, ground support energy and OPSEC.

The USDA’s Biorefinery, Renewable Chemical, and Biobased Product Manufacturing Assistance Program is soliciting research ideas that seek to assist the development, construction and retrofitting of commercial bio-refineries using clean energy technologies.
